ricky reads poetry...

i was extremely privileged today to be able to attend a poetry reading. not since my younger years have i been so excited to go and sit and watch another read their most heartfelt thoughts and feelings to a room full of strangers. this however was not your typical coffee shop, sparsely lit room, people in funny french hats poetry reading. this was something far more sophisticated and avant-garde. this was mrs. custer's 2nd grade poetry cafe.
we were introduced to about 20 of the brightest and most exciting poets of our time. my personal favorite was "honeybear" by ricky. the smoothness of his ideas were impressive. his words flowed from the pages, into his mouth and straight to my ears. not even the complementary cookies and lemonade the audience was given to consume upon completion of the reading was enough to make me forget these words...

honey so sweet and so neat
that i think i could eat
it all week
and i forgot it's getting lower, lower, lower
good-bye, see you next time

imagine my joy upon learning that the inspiration for this poem came from my own bottle of honey, that happens to be shaped like a bear, from which i sweeten my tea.
bravo ricky, bravo!
